In the Middle Ages, St. John's wort was said to be used to ward off witches and ill fortune at midsummer. It was employed as a medicinal herb at other times. Wood Betony, another favorite herb during the middle ages, was highly regarded as a cure-all herb. The herb was believed to possess many magical properties, including the power to ward off evil spirits and was widely used in amulets for this reason.
