Is a Private Tutor Worth It?

Struggling and getting behind at college can be a situation that causes a lot of unnecessary stress and frustration. And, as any college student knows, being stressed out and worried about exams is not the best start if you want to make the most of your study time and get good grades. The standards themselves may be uniform, but their implementation across states and localities isn’t. If you live in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, Virginia, Alaska or Puerto Rico, don’t worry; your state hasn’t adopted Common Core yet. So come exam time, be prepared to sit in front of a computer for hours — but bring your trusty old pen or No. 2 pencil, just in case.

Because of this, more and more college students are turning to private tutors as a way of getting some extra help when preparing for exams and minimize the amount of stress that they’re under. So, is private tuition worth it? Add to that the fact that employers now want to hire graduates who are well-versed in liberal arts and the sciences (regardless of their field of study), and you have the perfect catalyst for nationwide initiatives like Common Core. The generic roommate surveys that most institutions ask freshmen to fill out have gotten better in recent years. Many now includedesigned to map incoming students’ personalities and narrow the pool of potential roommates for each. Nevertheless, they remain depressingly inexact. Even if you answered each survey question honestly and completely, you stand a decent chance of being placed with a roommate with whom you share little in common.

Some smaller colleges and universities go further to foster intra-dorm compatibility. Many require incoming freshmen to sign up for a “residential course” whose participants typically must live on the same floor of a dormitory. If you’re asked to enroll in such a course, you’ll have access to a built-in before you and your roommate even meet. Whether it is the best solution for the country’s educational woes is up for debate, though. Using the aforementioned example, the equation can be rewritten as “If you add 3 apples to a basket, resulting in a total of 5 apples, how many apples did the basket have earlier?” You can still ask them about the specifics of Common Core, but understand there’s only so much they can do for you.

How Much Is Private Tuition?

The price that you pay for private tuition can vary. In short, it will depend on the tutor you choose and their qualifications – somebody who is an experienced professor is likely to online assignment writing charge more than a grad student for example. Many undergrad college students are happy to hire grad students to help them out – they’re often on the same wave length, and being college students themselves means that they’ve got a better understanding of the situation overall.
