Magic Mushroom Hot Cocoa Mix

This recipe makes a powdered mix that can be made up and stored or given as gifts. Use any combo of medicinal mushrooms that you like or have on hand. The marshmallow root is not essential though it really helps with the mouthfeel when using powdered mushrooms. Herbie friends Andrea and Matthias Reisen are cultivating medicinal mushrooms on their Healing Spirits Herb Farm and they sell a six-mushroom blend, which I recommend (find them in resources). When my daughter Lucie married Matt Day on the Winter Solstice, we served three different cocoas-and gave out mugs with bags of the mixes as party favors. The three flavors were “classic cocoas” (with bittersweet chocolate bits and vanilla bean); “xocolat” (with chiles & mace); and “medicinal mushroom cocoa” Guess which one was most popular…yep, this recipe here!
Flavor therapy
Comforting, nourishing pick-me up; due to the chocolate & cocoa-somewhat stimulating-& perhaps aphrodisiac.
1cup of dry mix makes about 4 servings of cocoa
About 6 ounces organic cane sugar
About 5 ounces unsweetened cocoa powder
About 1 to 2 ounces of blended powered Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lions Mane medicinal mushrooms.
About ½ teaspoon each Ashwagandha, Astragalus, Marshmallow Root Powder; all optional
About 3 ounces Bittersweet Chocolate chips
2-3 pieces Vanilla Bean, halved lengthwise
In a bowl, combine the sugar cocoa with the powdered mushrooms and the optional root powder. Add the chocolate chips and the vanilla bean and mix well to combine. Store Magic Mushroom Cocoa Mix in a jar with a tight fitting lid in the pantry.
When ready to prepare the cocoa-for 1 serving-pour 1 cup milk of your choice into a saucepan. Palace over low heat;whisk in 3 or 4 tablespoons of the mix and whisk to incorporate. Heat thoroughly -allow to just barely come to a simmer (do not boil). Pour into a favorite mug and garnish with whipped cream or marshmallow if desired, though it really doesn’t need further embellishment.
Creative Possibilities
Add vanilla powder or vanilla sugar if you don’t have vanilla beans.
Some might like to add just a little spice like cinnamon, nutmeg, or even cardamom. I quite like mace.
