Bee Balm (Dried)
Bee Balm (Monarda fistulosa)
Bee Balm has a very strong flavor, is a bit bitter, so go slowly, and I love to add Bee Balm with other herbs: Oats, Alfalfa, Nettle, Dames Rocket, Anise Hyssop to name a few.
Medicinal Properties:
Antiseptic Powerhouse: Contains thymol, a potent natural compound with antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
Respiratory Relief: Traditionally used to soothe sore throats, alleviate cold/flu symptoms, and combat respiratory infections.
Digestive & Soothing Aid: The tea acts as a carminative, helping to ease indigestion, nausea, bloating, and menstrual cramps. It also functions as a gentle nervine, promoting relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety.
Topical Healing: When used externally as a salve or poultice, it soothes insect stings, minor scrapes, and skin irritations. Chewing the leaves and applying the poultice can also be used for burns.
Energetic & Emotional Support: Known to "lift the spirits," it is traditionally used for drawing out heat/fire, addressing kidney and bladder burning pain, and relaxing the nerves.
Specific Application:
"Journeying Salve": A salve made from the flowers and leaves is applied to specific points (3rd eye, armpits, throat, navel, inner thighs, soles of feet) and is typically used during a day-long fast, not for bedtime.
Culinary Uses:
Edible Spice: The entire plant is edible. Both leaves and flowers provide a distinct spicy, oregano-like flavor to salads, teas, and meats.
Gardening Benefits:
Pollinator Magnet: An excellent plant for attracting beneficial pollinators, including bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
Companion Planting: Known to enhance the health and flavor of nearby tomatoes.
